Wyoming at night as seen from outer space
Image courtesy of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program and the International Dark Sky Association.

This is a view of Wyoming, along with portions of Colorado, Utah and Idaho to provide some context (state boundaries are in red). This is an edited version of the United States image found at the International Dark Sky Association's web site. LASSO has added labels for the cities of Laramie, Cheyenne, Denver and Fort Collins. The sky glow from the excessive lights of Fort Collins and Cheyenne can be seen from Laramie at night. These images indicate direct lighting of outer space by “up lighting.” It shows the incredible amount of light wasted by many lighting fixutres. Billions of dollars are being spent to broadcast light into outer space when it should be directed towards the ground.
